default gateway
This term is a technical specification used primarily in computer networking and IT administration. It describes the specific exit point a device uses to send traffic outside its own local subnet. If a packet's destination is not within the local network, the device automatically forwards it to this designated node.
In a home environment, the default gateway is almost always the wireless router. In enterprise environments, it may be a sophisticated layer 3 switch or a dedicated firewall. Misconfiguring this setting typically results in a total loss of external connectivity, even if the local network remains functional.
